Historic Women Leadership and Rising Athletes Signal Indonesia’s Boxing Revival

PERTINASULSEL.OR.ID |  INDONESIA boxing is witnessing a powerful resurgence, driven by a new generation of female athletes and historic leadership that is redefining the sport’s future.

At the center of this revival stands Huswatun Hasanah, one of Indonesia’s most accomplished female boxers. The fighter from Central Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, made history by reaching the podium at the 2018 Asian Games and later at the 2021 ASBC Elite Asian Boxing Championships in Dubai.

Her rise continued on the national stage, where she captured consecutive gold medals at the 2021 National Sports Week of Indonesia in Papua and the 2024 National Sports Week of Indonesia in Aceh–North Sumatra.

Internationally, she added a bronze medal at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games and a silver medal at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.

Another rising star, Nabila Maharani, further demonstrated Indonesia’s growing strength by winning gold at the 2025 Taipei City Cup International Boxing Tournament. Alongside athletes such as Endang, Aldriani Beatrichx Suguro, and Christina Marwan Jembay, the new generation is steadily strengthening Indonesia’s presence in regional and continental competitions.

Yet the revival of Indonesian boxing is not only taking place inside the ring. It is also being shaped by historic leadership within Persatuan Tinju Amatir Indonesia (PERTINA).

In August 2025, Hillary Brigitta Lasut was elected President of PERTINA, becoming the first woman to lead the Indonesian boxing federation. Her election marked a historic shift in a sport traditionally dominated by men.
